The Beauty Queen of Leenane
4 – 29 October 2022
Theatre on the Square, Sandton

The Beauty Queen of Leenane, a theatrical masterpiece by acclaimed Irish playwright Martin McDonagh (In Bruge, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Hangmen) and winner of four Tony Awards, is a darkly comic tale about the turbulent, dysfunctional, and often savage relationship between mother and daughter, Mag and Maureen Folan.

The play centres around the life of Maureen, an unmarried middle-aged woman, as she cares for her ailing mother Mag, and tries to find love.  When the two brothers enter, we are set on a path to the play’s thrilling conclusion. Interspersed with romance and humour, this psychological thriller will have audiences on the edge of their seats.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is the debut production from the How Now Brown Cow Productions stable, spearheaded by Daniel Galloway.

Mutli-award winner Charmaine Weir-Smith (The Train Driver) directs a stellar cast starring Jennifer Steyn(Recipes for Love and Murder, The Inconvenience Of Wings) as Mag, Julie-Anne McDowell (The Revlon Girl, Couplet) as Maureen, Bryan Hiles (Sweeney Todd, Cabaret) as Pato and Sven Ruygrok (Spud, Abraham Lincoln) as Ray.

TROUPE THEATRE COMPANY presents
in association with Daphne Kuhn, Theatre on the Square

HANSARD
by Simon Woods

with FIONA RAMSAY & GRAHAM HOPKINS
directed by ROBERT WHITEHEAD

10th – 27th August

An intriguing, witty and moving new international play which premiered at London’s National Theatre shortly before the start of the global pandemic, will be presented for the first time in South Africa. It will star leading award - winning theatre veterans, FIONA RAMSAY and GRAHAM HOPKINS and be directed by ROBERT WHITEHEAD

It’s a summer morning and Tory politician Robin Hesketh has returned home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares with his wife, Diana. Although the drama is set in 1988, it is written with today in mind. Robin is strongly right-wing and contemptuous of identity politics, while Diana’s liberal attitudes are excitingly critical of Tory rule and entitlement. Their personal relationship is also not as blissful as it seems and family secrets spark, in this compelling domestic drama.

Not to be missed by lovers of brilliant, thought provoking and legitimate theatre.

Bookings can be made online via Computicket on www.computicket.com or by calling 0861 915 8000 – or call the theatre on 083 377 4969 or 011 883-8606. The normal ticket price is R180 but there are special discounts for seniors, students and for group bookings.
Seats are unreserved.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A TROPHY WIFE?

14th - 24th September

The play follows the highs and lows of reaching middle age...

BOOK NOW

SO YOU WANT TO BE A TROPHY WIFE? is written and performed by Sue Diepeveen, and directed by Wynne Bredenkamp. The play follows the highs and lows of reaching middle age and pokes fun at how society ignores women in this particular category. In a world awash with ‘influencers’ and ‘blessers’, poor old Marie is swamped! Feeling invisible and desperate, her only hope, it seems, is to find herself a rich husband. But that is easier said than done. She’ll also need to make few changes in order to attract said rich man. Can mutton really be dressed up as lamb? Does it want to be dressed up as lamb?

Audiences are invited to laugh along with the character Marie as she looks at the unbelievable expectations that society places on women, and how ridiculous the fairer sex can be in the pursuit of what we think is happiness.

“she has created a character almost comical in her naivety, while also being deeply sympathetic at the same time.” – Lindsay Kruger (Broadway World)

“She pulls us into her gaze, into her space.” – Robyn Cohen (The Cape Robyn)
