28th January – 15th February

Join a star-studded cast for a hot, romantic and uplifting musical evening. LOVING YOU proudly opens at Sandton’s Auto & General Theatre on the Square for a three-week run from the 28th January till the 15th February. Celebrated and award-winning musical theatre artists join together to serenade audience members, by recreating the big musical duets and love stories from Broadway.

LOVING YOU is a night where audiences will be taken on a musical journey through the stages and different kinds of love, as the cast sings about this most powerful of all human forces.

Where did you meet your beloved? When did you fall in love? What did your first heartbreak feel like? Most of the musicals written by famous composers have some kind of love story at its core - and it is that love that drives the narrative and transcends our favourite characters into a life of higher meaning.

From nostalgic musical hits like “Let’s Fall in Love” and “Embraceable You”, a taste of Andrew Lloyd Webber, pop musical favourites from Grease and Footloose, modern day hits like “Someone Like You” (Jekyll and Hyde), “As Long as You’re Mine”, “Being Alive” as well as “Burn” (Hamilton), this performance of love songs from the musicals in concert will bewitch and bewilder you. It will, of course, be only about loving you!

SHARON SPIEGEL-WAGNER (Grease; Aspects of Love, Hairspray, The Marvin Hamlisch Story where she was nominated for best leading actress in a musical. Other credits include features in international and local films and TV as well as straight theatre). OR NOT TO BE…
HOW SHAKESPEARE COULD CHANGE YOUR DEATH!

What if Shakespeare knew something about death that we don't?

New York based actor, playwright, and scholar, SIMON FORTIN, weaves death speeches from Shakespeare, with his own stories of dying on stage. One of these stories tells of his “death scene” in the American TV series SEX & The CITY, and how that experience would change the course of his life.

Through this highly entertaining evening, Fortin invites Shakespeare to teach us how we might approach mortality in new and creative ways.

Despite its topic, this show is funny, moving and uplifting.

HE HAD IT COMING

14th - 25th April

multi-sketch revue that employs satire, singing, poetry, humour and drama to comment on a range of contemporary themes

BOOK NOW

HE HAD IT COMING, a collection of old and new sketches by Mike van Graan, and featuring an exciting new talent in Nancy Sekhokoane, will be staged at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square from 14-26 April 2020.  Directed by veteran actress, Faniswa Yisa, the multi-sketch revue employs satire, singing, poetry, humour and drama to comment on a range of contemporary themes, provoking both reflection and catharsis.

HE HAD IT COMING was produced in October 2019 by the University of Pretoria where Van Graan served as an artist-in-residence.  His previous one-person, multi-sketch revues include three editions of Bafana Republic, as well as Pay Back the Curry, State Fracture and Land Acts, the latter three with Daniel Richards, directed by Rob van Vuuren.  Many of those revues achieved critical and audience acclaim, and earned their performers awards as well as providing them with platforms to showcase their talents.

From the responses thus far, HE HAD IT COMING is likely to do the same for Nancy Sekhokoane, who has already earned a Fleur du Cap Award as Best Student, having graduated from AFDA in 2018.

“….the play hit all the right notes” – Zukiswa Pikoli, Daily Maverick.

“What a fabulous show.  What a great performance…what talent!” was a message from the organisers of a literary Festival in Prince Albert where the show was performed on 2 November.

During a subsequent, short run at the Masambe Theatre (Baxter Theatre Complex), the responses - gleaned from Facebook posts - have been similarly enthusiastic.

“What beautiful writing, directing and what an incredible performance by this ridiculously talented Nancy Sekhokoane.” - Thandi Sebe

“Brilliant and whip-smart script and the cherry on the top is phenomenal actress Nancy Sekhokoane.” – Tina Schouw

“Blown away by the writing…Faniswa’s directing was phenomenal and Nancy Sekhokoane’s acting left us all in love with her.” – Thulani Nxumalo

“Oh wow…an outstanding production…a must-see…amazing performance by a very talented Nancy Sekhokoane…addressing relevant contemporary social, political and personal issues.  This is an award-winning production by an award-winning team!” – Patric Solomon

“Magnificent text…extraordinary performance…brilliant direction…” – Marianne Thamm

“Potent social commentary and sizzling humour” – Malika Ndlovu

Wits University Press will be launching a compilation of sketches from Van Graan’s six one-person revues in March 2020, and these books will be available for sale during the run at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square.
