AUTO & GENERAL THEATRE ON THE SQUARE will take precautions and temporarily suspend current productions.
However, there will be not be total shutdown!

In line with the Government’s response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its effective measures, the AUTO & GENERAL THEATRE ON THE SQUARE will reschedule all productions until after the Easter Weekend or till further notice. The comedy shows postponed will include ARTIFICIALLY INFEMININATED with Claudine Ullman, SOBER SEX with Ntosh Madlingozi and PROBLEM CHILD with Loyiso Madinga.

However, following the ban on gatherings of 100 or more people, the theatre has elected to continue to operate small weekly matinee music concerts and rehearsals. Ticket sales for concerts will be limited to 60 selected and spaced seats per show in its 200-seater Sandton venue. Further communication will be distributed.

“While the health of everyone is paramount, we cannot allow the total collapse of the entertainment industry which will be hardest hit”, says executive producer Daphne Kuhn. The theatre must take cognizance of pleas of musicians and artists for work – and commitments to actors, directors, designers, playwrights, musicians, technicians and its resident staff who are most reliant on their income.

The theatre believes that it is vital that we keep spirits high with a sense of comfort through the positive medium of theatre, music and entertainment. We pride ourselves in being a home for many artists, story-tellers and musicians by continuously fueling the industry.

However, we have taken matters very seriously and we shall go the extra mile to ensure that our venue will be as safe, hygienic and as welcoming as ever.

In spite of the challenges, audiences can still look forward to an exciting and positive year ahead with new local and international plays, with new works by Mike van Graan and Paul Slabolepszy to name a few

PAUL SLABOLEPSZY’S
BORDERLINE

28th April – 23rd May

Directed by BOBBY HEANEY
Starring ANTONY COLEMAN and LESEDI JOB
with PAUL SLABOLEPSZY

To what extent does childhood trauma affect our adult emotional well-being?

More than 17 million people in our country are dealing with depression, substance abuse, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, according to the Mental Health Federation of South Africa. Domestic abuse, physical and emotional, as well post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which can be a consequence of war and/or living in conditions where violence is ever present, are issues that mental health practitioners deal with on an ongoing basis.

Paul Slabolepszy’s latest play, BORDERLINE, is a gripping, powerful play that deals with complex family relationships and the consequences of unresolved trauma; shot through with dark humour and surprising twists and turns, this is a play not to be missed.

Businessman Raymond Kruger and his wife of less than two years, Wellness & Beauty Shop Owner Faith Dlamini, are in the process of emigrating to Canada. As the only child of a single parent, Faith has foreseen the emotional impact this move will inevitably have on both her and her doting mother, and prepares for it by tackling the issue of loss and separation head on. Raymond’s situation is entirely different. His mother is deceased, his sister lives in the UK and he and his abusive father, a 1970s Border War veteran living in a retirement village in the Western Cape, have not spoken to each other in over twenty years. On the eve of their departure, Faith convinces her husband to reach out and make peace with an old man who, unable to deal with his own demons back in the day, made the lives of all those in his orbit a perpetual torment.

Raymond is played by ANTONY COLEMAN and LESEDI JOB is Faith. The part of the father, Vaughn, is played by the playwright, PAUL SLABOLEPSZY. BOBBY HEANEY is the director.

Bookings can be made through Computicket (tel. 0861 915 8000) or by calling the theatre on 011 883-8606 for school group enquiries and block bookings. Q&A‘s after the show to be arranged.

NIK RABINOWITZ in LATE BLOOMER

10th – 20th June

South Africa’s funniest Xhosa-speaking Jewish comedian returns to Sandton in 2020

NIK RABINOWITZ in LATE BLOOMER

Apparently we’re in a recession, but according to Nik’s dentist, the only thing that’s receding is Rabinowitz’s hair line.

Despite all of this hardship, Nik has managed to find the confidence to put on a new show, where he covers his bald spot, and a number of other exciting topics, like when to get your first skateboard (surprise, it’s not at 42); how to tell if you’ve been Kondo-ed; and what you can find out from a DNA test. (Spoiler alert: A LOT.) There are even a few war stories. Although he wasn’t in any wars so they’re more like stories about war stories, but they’re still very good.

LATE BLOOMER is extremely funny as well as heart-warming.

“One of the best sets by a South African comic in the last four or five years.” - Bruce Dennill

HE HAD IT COMING

14th - 25th April

multi-sketch revue that employs satire, singing, poetry, humour and drama to comment on a range of contemporary themes

BOOK NOW

HE HAD IT COMING, a collection of old and new sketches by Mike van Graan, and featuring an exciting new talent in Nancy Sekhokoane, will be staged at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square from 14-26 April 2020.  Directed by veteran actress, Faniswa Yisa, the multi-sketch revue employs satire, singing, poetry, humour and drama to comment on a range of contemporary themes, provoking both reflection and catharsis.

HE HAD IT COMING was produced in October 2019 by the University of Pretoria where Van Graan served as an artist-in-residence.  His previous one-person, multi-sketch revues include three editions of Bafana Republic, as well as Pay Back the Curry, State Fracture and Land Acts, the latter three with Daniel Richards, directed by Rob van Vuuren.  Many of those revues achieved critical and audience acclaim, and earned their performers awards as well as providing them with platforms to showcase their talents.

From the responses thus far, HE HAD IT COMING is likely to do the same for Nancy Sekhokoane, who has already earned a Fleur du Cap Award as Best Student, having graduated from AFDA in 2018.

“….the play hit all the right notes” – Zukiswa Pikoli, Daily Maverick.

“What a fabulous show.  What a great performance…what talent!” was a message from the organisers of a literary Festival in Prince Albert where the show was performed on 2 November.

During a subsequent, short run at the Masambe Theatre (Baxter Theatre Complex), the responses - gleaned from Facebook posts - have been similarly enthusiastic.

“What beautiful writing, directing and what an incredible performance by this ridiculously talented Nancy Sekhokoane.” - Thandi Sebe

“Brilliant and whip-smart script and the cherry on the top is phenomenal actress Nancy Sekhokoane.” – Tina Schouw

“Blown away by the writing…Faniswa’s directing was phenomenal and Nancy Sekhokoane’s acting left us all in love with her.” – Thulani Nxumalo

“Oh wow…an outstanding production…a must-see…amazing performance by a very talented Nancy Sekhokoane…addressing relevant contemporary social, political and personal issues.  This is an award-winning production by an award-winning team!” – Patric Solomon

“Magnificent text…extraordinary performance…brilliant direction…” – Marianne Thamm

“Potent social commentary and sizzling humour” – Malika Ndlovu

Wits University Press will be launching a compilation of sketches from Van Graan’s six one-person revues in March 2020, and these books will be available for sale during the run at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square.
