Zee Ntuli and Daphne Kuhn are thrilled to present a new SA comedy of errors with a phenomenal and high profile young South African cast!

Walter, a psychology major drop-out has miraculously landed his own TV talk show. He is out of his depth, and totally incompetent. Despite this, he intends on bluffing his way. Walter is dating the show’s producer Jade, an abrasive, vapid, foul-mouthed go-getter. Unlike Walter, she fits right into the high intensity, hostile world of live television. She is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. She is admired by the show’s floor manager, Maureen, who exists to impress Jade. Things get complicated when the show’s new cameraman arrives - Trent, a woman’s man in every way. Unfortunately for the lusting Jade, she is too self-absorbed to realize that Trent is head of heels in love with Walter. The situation spirals out of control, when the show’s first guest arrives with hilarious consequences.

ASK WALTER has a remarkable team driving the show. It has been created and co-written by Aimee Goldsmith and film-maker, Zee Ntuli. Seen recently at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square in Waiting for Jack and Cheers to Sarajevo, Aimee is proud to announce that this is the first theatre show that she and Zee Ntuli will be working on together.  Zee Ntuli previously directed Aimee Goldsmith in TV drama Mshika Shika, as well as several commercials. His feature film Hard to Get, did both the local and international circuit and received numerous awards at acclaimed international festivals. Netflix has now bought the rights to the film. Zee also recently wrote and directed Lokoza which premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Aimee who has spent the last few years on stage with her play Cheers to Sarajevo (which premiered in Austria last year), is now taking a back seat from performing and is directing the well-known cast. Heading up the show is Jeremiah Mtonga, a known TV personality. Gorgeous fashion Blogger and the face of The Big Bad Wolf, Ricci Lee Kalish plays his love interest. Ricci is also known for her hypnotizing performance in Necktie Youth. Others in the cast are Arthur Bongani Zith, James Reynolds and Denel Honeyball.

The comedy will run at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square from 15th May – 4th June 2017. There will be 6 performances per week - Tuesdays to Fridays at 8.15pm and two shows on Saturdays at 6pm and 8.15pm. Enquire about dinner show specials and group discounts. MAMBA REPUBLIC

Written by and starring Ben Voss & John van de Ruit

Mamba Republic is a rapidly-paced satirical sketch comedy soon to hit theatres countrywide. Reuniting the talents of Ben Voss (Beauty Ramapelepele) and John van de Ruit (Spud) Mamba Republic takes a savagely funny look at all that is wrong and very wrong in the Rainbow Nation.  With their unique blend of sharp wit, hopeless optimism and clever characterisation, the duo sink their fangs into the fiascos, farces and foibles of South African life. Whether it is their unique take on fees must fall, state capture, online dating, the economy, sport, technology, casual racism, an alternative national anthem, or even the most unusual football match in living memory, Mamba Republic will have you hooting in your chair and clutching at your face at the utter absurdity of life at the foot of Africa.

Mamba Republic follows in the footsteps of Green Mamba (2002) and Black Mamba (2005) which together racked up over 800 performances in five years, winning numerous awards and developing a cult following all over Southern Africa.

Filled with humanity, humor, and razor-sharp dialogue, Freud’s Last Session imagines the meeting of two of the 20th century’s greatest academics. On the brink of war in Europe, author and former atheist C.S. Lewis visits the London home of Dr. Sigmund Freud. Lewis’s recent embrace of Christianity stands in stark contrast to Dr. Freud, whose beliefs are influenced by his life’s work in science. Amidst evacuations and air raid sirens these two legendary scholars debate religion, sex, love, the existence of God, and the meaning of life itself.

The Old Man and the Sea is a short novel written by the American author Ernest Hemingway in 1951 in Bimini, Bahamas, and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction by Hemingway that was published during his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Florida.

In 1953, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and it was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to their awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954.

SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE ON THE UNIVERSE

Starring Michelle Douglas

Directed by Steven Feinstein

Michelle Joffe plays multiple roles in Jane Wagner's one-woman play, a comedic look at and critique of contemporary American society.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe takes up themes of the interconnectedness of people and of people’s methods for finding meaning in lives that sometimes seem absurd. Since the panoply of characters whose thoughts Trudy transmits exemplifies a range of race, class, and even gender, the play suggests that a common search for meaning links humanity at its core.

The play’s allusions to the performance of the play itself allow Jane Wagner to suggest that the ritual of attending and performing theatre creates a site for such linkages to occur. The play’s theatricality, and the fact that all of its characters are performed by the same actor, stresses universal human connections.

A play about Can Themba

BOOK NOW

31st October – 18th November

THE HOUSE OF TRUTH

by Siphiwo Mahala
Starring Sello Maake Ncube
Directed by Vanessa Cook

The House of Truth is a play by Siphiwo Mahala.  It premiered at the National Arts Festival in 2016 where it received rave reviews and opens at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square on the 31st October.

The play is about Daniel Canodoce “Can” Themba (21 June 1924 – 1968), a writer most famous for being the assistant editor of the Drum Magazine in the fifties and for writing The Suit, originally as a short story.   The play gives a considerable amount of detail about him, which is not surprising, because the playwright is currently pursuing doctoral studies on the life and works of Can Themba.  Virtually the only thing we don’t see is his early death in Swaziland, presumably from alcohol related health breakdown.

Directed by Vanessa Cook, The House of Truth stars Sello Maake kaNcube as Can Themba.
